ARTIST STATEMENT

I create multimedia drawings and paintings dealing with the cluttered nature of human relationships both in the culture of The United States as a whole, but also reflecting on my own self destructive habits in relationships and my pension toward callousness. Growing up in the United States, I find America’s cultural consciousness to be largely cyclical repeating patterns from its the past just in new forms and verticals. In my works, I place repetitious symbols from these American routines next to one another in a flattened collage aesthetic to highlight how similar and numerous the events are. I use an array of mediums to build paintings with a variety of colors, marks, and figuration on large paper in order to visually capture the ridiculous and grand nature of human made problems. I also create fictitious absurd narratives that use different animals as personifications of myself. I paint and draw surreal scenarios for the animals to exist in that display my own detrimental practices as a way to express them in a convoluted way. As an example, I will paint the animal performing an action as a marker for my own actions, while the environment it interacts with represents the parts of my life these actions affect. These actions and scenarios aren’t one for one to my own, not as personification of the animals but as a way to distance myself from facing my own issues. Desensitization is a word that can summarize my interests in both American society and myself, America’s indifference to its own spiraling and my avoidance to admit my bad habits.
